EC:56 is a loyalty purse write error that occurs in Speed Queen washers equipped with a card-based payment system. The "loyalty purse" refers to a stored value register on a laundry payment card, which tracks the available credit balance. When a wash cycle is initiated or completed, the machine attempts to write updated balance data back to the card's memory chip. If that write operation fails or cannot be confirmed, the washer throws EC:56 to indicate the transaction could not be properly recorded on the card.

The most common trigger for this error is a fault with the card itself. The card's memory chip may be physically damaged, worn from repeated use, or corrupted in a way that prevents successful write operations. Dirt, moisture, or debris on the card's contact surface can also interrupt communication between the card reader and the card's chip, causing an incomplete or failed write sequence. A card that was removed prematurely during a previous transaction may also carry corrupted data that prevents future writes.

In some cases, the card reader hardware inside the machine may be contributing to the problem, particularly if the error occurs consistently across multiple different cards. However, the recommended first diagnostic step is to retry the same card. If the error clears on retry, the failure was likely a momentary communication issue. If EC:56 persists across multiple attempts or across different cards, further investigation of the card reader module is warranted.
