What EI:01 means on a Speed Queen washer
The EI:01 error code on a Speed Queen washer indicates a failure in the infrared (IR) transmission signal during communication with the Micro-Wand, a handheld diagnostic and programming tool used by technicians to interface with the washer's control system. The Micro-Wand communicates with the machine through a line-of-sight infrared signal, similar in principle to a TV remote control. When the washer's IR receiver fails to detect a valid signal from the Micro-Wand, the EI:01 code is generated and communication is interrupted.
The most frequent cause of this error is a misalignment between the Micro-Wand's IR transmitter and the washer's IR receiver window. Even a small angular offset, obstruction, or excessive distance can break the communication link entirely. Ambient light sources, particularly direct sunlight or bright fluorescent lighting near the IR port, can also saturate the receiver and cause false read failures.
Additional causes include a depleted or failing battery in the Micro-Wand, a dirty or scratched IR lens on either the wand or the receiver port on the machine, or an internal fault in the washer's control board IR receiver circuit itself. Because the first recommended diagnostic step is simply re-aiming the Micro-Wand, the majority of EI:01 occurrences are resolved without any parts replacement.

Common causes of EI:01
- 01
Micro-Wand misalignment
Wiring / connectionThe IR signal requires a clear, direct line of sight to the washer's receiver port. Holding the Micro-Wand at an angle or too far away will prevent the signal from registering.
- 02
Obstruction between Micro-Wand and receiver
Wiring / connectionAny physical object placed between the wand and the IR receiver window on the washer will block the signal. Check that nothing is covering or partially blocking the receiver port.
- 03
Excessive ambient light interference
Wiring / connectionStrong direct sunlight or bright fluorescent lighting aimed at the receiver port can overwhelm the IR sensor, preventing it from detecting the Micro-Wand's signal. Moving the wand or shading the receiver area can resolve this.
- 04
Weak or depleted Micro-Wand battery
Part replacementA low battery in the Micro-Wand reduces the strength of the IR transmission. Replacing the battery and retrying communication will confirm if this is the cause.
- 05
Dirty or damaged IR lens
Wiring / connectionDirt, grease, or scratches on the IR lens of the Micro-Wand or on the washer's receiver window can diffuse or block the signal. Clean both surfaces with a soft, dry cloth and inspect for physical damage.
