F05 on a Whirlpool washer indicates a water temperature sensor error. The control board has detected that the temperature sensor is reading outside its valid range, or that the water temperature did not increase by at least 3.6°F (2°C) during a heating cycle. Because it is a delayed code, the washer only displays F05 after the fault has occurred 10 times, so the problem may predate the alert by several wash cycles.

Continuing to run the washer with an active F05 code is not recommended. If the heating element or temperature sensor has failed, the machine may not be heating water properly, which can result in clothes not being washed effectively and detergent not dissolving fully. There is also a small risk that an unmonitored heating circuit could cause related issues over time, so it is best to diagnose and resolve the fault before continuing regular use.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. A replacement thermistor is typically an inexpensive part, often in the range of $10 to $40. A heating element replacement can run $20 to $80 for the part. If professional labor is required, expect to add $75 to $150 or more depending on your location. Replacing whichever component tests out of specification will typically resolve the fault.

Resetting the washer may temporarily clear the displayed code, but it will not fix the underlying problem. Since F05 only appears after 10 occurrences, the fault counter will continue to increment if the root cause is not repaired, and the code will return.
