OB stands for Out-Of-Balance on a Whirlpool washer. It means the washer detected that the laundry load was distributed unevenly and the basket exceeded safe balance limits during the spin cycle. The washer automatically retries the spin four times before displaying the code and entering STANDBY mode. The first step is to open the lid, redistribute the clothes evenly, close the lid, and attempt the spin again.

When the OB code is active, the washer has already entered STANDBY mode and stopped the spin cycle, so it will not continue operating on its own. Attempting to force repeated spin cycles with a seriously imbalanced load can put stress on the drum bearings and suspension components over time. It is best to resolve the balance issue or diagnose the underlying fault before running additional cycles.

If the error is caused by an uneven load or an unlevel machine, there is no parts cost at all. Replacement suspension components such as rods or springs typically range from $15 to $60 in parts depending on the model, plus labor if a technician is involved. A faulty out-of-balance solenoid switch is generally an affordable part, though total repair costs including a service call can range from $80 to $200 or more. Getting a diagnostic assessment before ordering parts is recommended to confirm the exact cause.

Start by opening the lid and rearranging the clothes so weight is distributed evenly around the drum, then close the lid and restart the spin cycle. If the error returns, check that the washer is sitting level on the floor and that the leveling feet are properly adjusted.
