The appliance will continue to run wash cycles but operates without the heater active, meaning water is not heated during the wash or rinse phases. The fault points to an open circuit somewhere in the electrical path between the control board and the heating element.

The dishwasher is designed to continue operating without the heater when E:2040 is present, so there is no immediate safety hazard from running it in this state. However, without heated water your dishes will not be cleaned or sanitized effectively, and drying performance will be significantly reduced. It is best to resolve the fault before relying on the dishwasher for normal use.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause.
