The triac is a solid-state switching component on the main control board that controls the 120 VAC supply to the drain pump motor. When the control board sends a drain command but detects an abnormal signal back from the triac circuit, whether due to a failed triac, a wiring fault, or a pump issue causing excessive current draw, it logs error code 24 and halts the cycle.

The first diagnostic step involves two parallel checks: inspecting the drain hose for any kinks, clogs, or restrictions that would cause the pump to work harder than normal and potentially trigger the fault, and verifying that 120 VAC is actually reaching the drain pump during the drain cycle. If voltage is present at the pump terminals but the pump does not run, the pump motor itself is likely failed. If voltage is absent, the fault points upstream toward the wiring harness or the triac on the control board.

A failed triac on the control board is a common root cause and typically results in either a completely open circuit (pump never receives power) or a shorted condition (pump cannot be switched off).
