What E61 means on a Electrolux washer
The E61 error code on an Electrolux washer indicates that insufficient heating was detected during the wash cycle. The machine monitors water temperature through an NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor, which changes resistance as water temperature rises. If the control board does not detect an adequate temperature increase within a defined timeframe, it logs E61 and skips the heating phase entirely, allowing the cycle to continue without reaching the target wash temperature.
The four primary suspects are the NTC temperature sensor, the heating element, the associated wiring, and the control board itself. A faulty NTC sensor may report incorrect temperature readings, causing the board to believe heating has failed even if the element is functional. A failed or degraded heating element will simply not generate heat, making the temperature rise impossible. Wiring faults such as broken connectors, corroded terminals, or damaged insulation can interrupt the signal between the sensor and the board or cut power delivery to the element.
Diagnosis should begin with resistance testing of the NTC sensor and continuity testing of the heating element. The control board becomes the focus only after the sensor, element, and wiring have been confirmed good. Because the wash cycle continues without heating, laundry may come out inadequately cleaned, particularly for cycles that rely on elevated temperatures for soil removal or sanitization.

Common causes of E61
- 01
Faulty NTC temperature sensor
Part replacementThe NTC thermistor can fail or drift out of calibration, sending incorrect resistance readings to the control board. If the board cannot confirm a rising temperature signal, it registers E61 even when the heating element itself is working.
- 02
Failed heating element
Part replacementThe heating element may have burned out or developed an open circuit, preventing it from generating heat at all. A continuity test on the element will confirm whether it has failed.
- 03
Wiring or connector fault
Wiring / connectionCorroded terminals, loose connectors, or damaged wiring between the heating element, NTC sensor, and control board can interrupt power delivery or sensor signals. Inspect all related harness connections for visible damage or corrosion.
- 04
Faulty control board
Part replacementIf the control board cannot correctly send power to the heating element or read the NTC sensor signal, it may trigger E61 even when all other components test properly. The board should only be considered after the sensor, element, and wiring have been ruled out.
