Error code 221 on a Fisher & Paykel washer indicates a RAM (Random Access Memory) check failure within the Motor Control Module (MCM). During startup or operation, the MCM performs internal self-diagnostics to verify the integrity of its onboard RAM. If the module detects that its RAM is corrupt, inaccessible, or returning incorrect data during this check, it halts operation and triggers code 221. This is a hardware-level fault originating entirely within the control module itself.

The Motor Control Module is responsible for regulating motor speed, direction, and torque throughout the wash cycle. It interprets commands from the main electronic controller and translates them into precise electrical signals to drive the motor. A RAM failure inside this module means it cannot reliably store or retrieve the temporary data needed to execute these functions, making safe or accurate motor operation impossible.

Because the fault is internal to the Motor Control Module's onboard memory circuitry, there is no field-level repair possible for the RAM itself.
