What 02 means on a GE refrigerator
Error code 02 on a GE refrigerator indicates a refrigerator compartment temperature sensor fault. The sensor, typically a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor, continuously reports compartment temperature to the main control board. The control board monitors this signal and triggers error code 02 when the reported temperature falls outside the physically plausible range: above 150°F or below -58°F. Readings in these extreme ranges almost always point to an electrical or mechanical fault in the sensor circuit rather than an actual compartment temperature problem.
The most common causes are wiring and connection issues. A loose or missing sensor connector, corroded terminals, a pinched wire, a cut wire, or a short circuit in the wiring harness can all produce out-of-range voltage signals that the control board interprets as impossibly high or low temperatures. A short circuit typically drives the signal to one extreme, while an open circuit (disconnected connector or cut wire) drives it to the other. These conditions need to be ruled out before condemning the sensor itself.
If the wiring and connectors check out, the thermistor itself may have failed internally. A failed thermistor will present an incorrect resistance value outside its normal operating range, producing a signal the control board cannot interpret as a valid temperature. Resistance testing with a multimeter at the sensor terminals, compared against the expected values for the compartment temperature, can confirm sensor failure. Replacing a faulty sensor typically restores normal operation and clears the code.

Common causes of 02
- 01
Loose or disconnected sensor connector
Wiring / connectionThe sensor connector may have vibrated loose or was not fully seated, breaking the circuit and causing an out-of-range reading. Visually inspect and firmly reseat the connector at both the sensor and harness ends.
- 02
Damaged or cut sensor wiring
Part replacementThe wiring harness running to the refrigerator sensor can be pinched, cut, or chafed against a sharp edge, creating an open or intermittent circuit. Trace the full length of the wire and look for visible damage or breaks.
- 03
Short circuit in the sensor circuit
Part replacementA short circuit can occur when two wires in the harness contact each other or contact the refrigerator cabinet, producing a signal the control board reads as an extreme temperature. Check wire insulation for wear or melting along the harness route.
- 04
Corroded or failed connector contacts
Wiring / connectionMoisture inside the refrigerator compartment can corrode the sensor connector terminals over time, increasing resistance and degrading the signal. Inspect the connector pins for discoloration, corrosion, or pitting, and clean or replace as needed.
- 05
Failed refrigerator thermistor
Part replacementThe thermistor itself can fail internally, producing a resistance value far outside its normal operating range and triggering error code 02. Confirm by measuring sensor resistance with a multimeter and comparing the reading against the expected value for the current compartment temperature.
