Start by manually defrosting the unit to clear any existing frost buildup, then check the defrost heater for continuity using a multimeter. A reading of no continuity confirms the heater is open and needs replacement. Also test the defrost termination thermostat for continuity at room temperature; it should show continuity when cold and open when warm. Replace whichever component tests as faulty.
