The Er rS error code on a GE refrigerator indicates a refrigerator compartment sensor fault. Specifically, the control board has detected either a short circuit or an open circuit (disconnection) in the refrigerator temperature sensor circuit. This sensor is a thermistor, a resistive component whose resistance changes predictably with temperature, allowing the main PCB to monitor compartment temperature and regulate the cooling system. When the board reads a resistance value outside the expected range, either too low due to a short or infinite due to an open wire, it triggers this error.

The primary diagnostic target is the connector labeled CON7 on the main PCB, where the refrigerator sensor wiring terminates. The first step is checking White to White at CON7 for a proper resistance reading. A loose or corroded connection at this connector is one of the most frequent causes of the fault, since intermittent contact can produce erratic or out-of-range resistance readings even if the sensor itself is intact.

If the connector checks out, the fault likely lies in the sensor itself or the wiring harness running between the sensor and the PCB. Physical damage to the wiring, such as pinching, chafing against a cabinet edge, or moisture intrusion into a connector, can cause either a short or an open condition. In some cases, the sensor element itself fails internally, producing a permanently incorrect resistance value. Identifying whether the fault is in the wiring, the connector, or the sensor requires systematic resistance testing at each point in the circuit.
