What ERR means on a GE refrigerator
The ERR code on a GE refrigerator indicates that the control board cannot detect a valid RFID-encoded water filter or bypass plug in the filter housing. GE's RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) filter authentication system uses a small chip embedded in compatible filters and bypass plugs to communicate with the refrigerator's main control board. When this communication fails or no component is detected at all, the refrigerator disables both the ice maker and the water dispenser as a protective measure to prevent unfiltered water from being dispensed.
This code most commonly appears after a filter change when the wrong filter type is installed, when the filter seat is empty, or when a non-RFID-compatible filter has been inserted. GE's current RFID-compatible filter is the XWFE, which replaced the older XWF. The older XWF and other third-party filters without an embedded RFID chip will trigger the ERR code even if they fit physically in the housing. The bypass plug that allows ice and water operation without a filter installed must also be RFID-equipped, part number WR17X33825.
The ERR code will persist until the control board successfully reads a valid RFID signal from an installed filter or bypass plug. Simply resetting the refrigerator will not clear this code. The fix requires physically installing a compatible XWFE filter or the correct RFID bypass plug. Once a valid component is detected, the ice and water systems will reactivate automatically without any additional reset steps required.

Common causes of ERR
- 01
No filter or bypass plug installed
Part replacementThe filter housing is empty, which immediately triggers the ERR code and disables the ice and water systems. Install either a compatible XWFE filter or the RFID bypass plug to resolve it.
- 02
Non-RFID-compatible filter installed
Part replacementAn older XWF filter or a third-party filter without an embedded RFID chip may fit the housing physically but will not communicate with the control board, causing the ERR code. Replacing it with a genuine XWFE filter clears the error.
- 03
Filter not fully seated
Wiring / connectionIf the filter is inserted but not locked into its housing completely, the RFID chip may be too far from the reader to register. Remove the filter and reinstall it firmly until it clicks into the locked position.
- 04
Filter replaced with incorrect bypass plug
Part replacementAn older or non-RFID bypass plug installed in place of a water filter will also trigger the ERR code. Only the RFID-equipped bypass plug, part number WR17X33825, is recognized by the system.
- 05
Damaged or defective RFID chip on filter
Part replacementIn rare cases, the RFID chip on a new XWFE filter may be damaged or defective, preventing detection even when correctly installed. Trying a different XWFE filter will confirm whether the chip is the issue.
