GE Refrigerator Error Code F0
Shorted OFF key or open short on the key panel.
Shorted OFF key or open short on the key panel.
First step from the service manual
Determine if problem is with Key Panel or Control by disconnecting ribbon cable and measuring flat cable pins (model-specific pins). Should be open; should read <300 ohms while pressing OFF key.
The complete diagnostic procedure includes additional test steps, resistance specifications, wiring diagram references, and component test points.

What F0 means on a GE refrigerator
The F0 error code on a GE refrigerator indicates either a shorted OFF key or an open/short condition detected on the key panel circuit. This fault originates in the user interface system, which consists of a membrane-style key panel connected to the main control board via a flat ribbon cable. When the control board detects that the OFF key circuit is being held in a closed (shorted) state without any physical key press, or when the ribbon cable circuit reads outside expected resistance parameters, it logs the F0 fault and disables normal operation.
The primary diagnostic method involves disconnecting the ribbon cable from the control board and measuring resistance across the specific flat cable pins associated with the OFF key on that model. Under normal open conditions, the pins should read as open (no continuity). When the OFF key is physically pressed, the resistance should drop to below 300 ohms. If the pins read a low resistance value without the key being pressed, the key panel membrane itself has an internal short. If resistance is abnormally high or open even when pressing the key, there is a break in the circuit within the cable or membrane.
Common causes include a damaged or contaminated membrane keypad that creates a permanent contact at the OFF key position, a kinked or torn ribbon cable causing a short or open between conductors, and in some cases a failed control board that misreads the key panel input. Moisture intrusion behind the key panel is a frequent contributor to membrane shorts, as condensation or spills can bridge contact pads and simulate a constant key press signal.

Common causes of F0
- 01
Shorted membrane keypad
Part replacementThe membrane key panel has an internal short at the OFF key contact point, causing the control board to read the key as continuously pressed. This can result from moisture intrusion, physical damage, or normal wear that causes the contact layers to touch permanently.
- 02
Damaged or kinked ribbon cable
Part replacementThe flat ribbon cable connecting the key panel to the control board may be kinked, pinched, or partially torn, creating either a short between adjacent conductors or an open circuit. Inspect the cable along its entire length for visible damage or tight bends.
- 03
Moisture or contamination behind the panel
Wiring / connectionLiquid from spills or condensation can seep behind the key panel and bridge the contact pads, simulating a constant OFF key press. Disconnecting the panel and allowing it to dry completely may resolve this if no permanent damage occurred.
- 04
Faulty ribbon cable connection
Wiring / connectionThe ribbon cable connector at either the key panel or the control board may be loose, misaligned, or corroded, producing intermittent or permanent fault readings. Reseating the connector firmly at both ends is a low-cost first step before replacing components.
- 05
Failed control board
Part replacementIf the key panel and ribbon cable both test within normal parameters during the pin resistance measurement, the control board itself may be misinterpreting the key panel signals. This is the least common cause and should only be considered after the panel and cable have been ruled out.
