What F115 means on a GE refrigerator
The F115 error code on a GE refrigerator indicates that the control board is not receiving feedback from the odor filter fan when it has commanded that fan to run. The odor filter fan is responsible for circulating air through an activated carbon or similar filtration element to reduce food and refrigerant odors inside the fresh food compartment. When the control sends power to this fan motor, it also monitors a feedback signal, typically a tachometer or pulse signal from the fan motor, to confirm rotation. If that signal is absent while the fan is commanded on, the F115 fault is logged.
The most common causes fall into two categories: electrical connection failures and mechanical or motor failures. Loose, corroded, or damaged wiring harness connectors between the control board and the fan motor are frequent culprits, especially in environments with condensation or temperature cycling. A failed fan motor, where the windings are open or the motor is seized, will also prevent the feedback signal from reaching the board. In some cases, the fan blade can become obstructed by ice buildup or a foreign object, stalling the motor even though power is applied.
Diagnosis should begin at the fan connector itself, inspecting for pushed-back terminals, corrosion, or breaks in the harness. If connections are intact, resistance across the motor windings should be checked. A seized or open motor will need replacement. If the motor checks out electrically, the control board may be failing to properly interpret the feedback signal, though this is a less common cause.

Common causes of F115
- 01
Loose or damaged wiring connector
Wiring / connectionThe harness connector at the odor filter fan motor may be loose, corroded, or have a pushed-back terminal, breaking the feedback circuit. Inspect and reseat the connector, checking each terminal for corrosion or damage.
- 02
Failed odor filter fan motor
Part replacementThe fan motor windings may be open or the motor may be mechanically seized, preventing rotation and eliminating the feedback signal to the control board. Check resistance across the motor windings and attempt to spin the blade by hand to check for seizure.
- 03
Fan blade obstruction or ice buildup
Wiring / connectionIce accumulation or a foreign object can physically block the fan blade, stalling the motor even when power is applied. Inspect the fan area for obstructions and defrost if ice is present.
- 04
Broken or chafed wiring harness
Part replacementThe wire harness running to the fan motor may have a break or short caused by vibration or contact with a sharp edge, interrupting the feedback signal. Trace the harness from the fan to the control board and look for visible damage.
- 05
Faulty control board
Part replacementIf the fan motor, wiring, and connectors all test correctly, the control board may be failing to send power to the fan or unable to read the returning feedback signal. This is the least common cause and should only be suspected after all other components are confirmed good.
