GE Refrigerator Error Code R-10-g
Water Tank Heater Error
Water Tank Heater Error — open error detected by water tank heater: separation of housing part, contact error, disconnection, or short circuit.
First step from the service manual
With MAIN PCB CN78 separated from PCB, check resistance between black to brown wire; should be 45 ohms ±7%. Check 0 ohm: heater short, ∞ ohm: wire/bimetal open.
The complete diagnostic procedure includes additional test steps, resistance specifications, wiring diagram references, and component test points.

What R-10-g means on a GE refrigerator
Error code R-10-g on a GE refrigerator indicates a Water Tank Heater Error, specifically an open-circuit or fault condition detected in the water tank heater circuit. The water tank heater is a component that prevents the water supply tank from freezing in certain refrigerator configurations. The control board monitors this heater circuit continuously, and when it detects an abnormal reading, whether from a housing separation, a contact failure, a wire disconnection, or a short circuit, it triggers this error code to alert the technician to a problem in that circuit.
Diagnosis begins at the main PCB connector CN78. With CN78 disconnected from the board, a resistance check is performed between the black wire and the brown wire in that connector. The correct resistance for a properly functioning water tank heater is 45 ohms, plus or minus 7 percent, which places the acceptable range between approximately 41.8 ohms and 48.2 ohms. A reading of 0 ohms indicates the heater element has shorted internally. A reading of infinite resistance indicates an open condition, which points to a broken wire, a failed bimetal thermal cutout, or a disconnected terminal somewhere along the circuit path.
The bimetal component referenced in the diagnostic is a thermal safety device integrated into the heater circuit. If the bimetal has tripped or failed permanently due to overheating or age, it will create an open circuit that mimics a wire break. Physical inspection of the wire harness from CN78 to the heater assembly, including all connectors and the bimetal contact points, is necessary to isolate whether the fault is in the wiring, the bimetal, or the heater element itself.

Common causes of R-10-g
- 01
Open or broken wire in the heater circuit
Wiring / connectionA disconnected, broken, or corroded wire between connector CN78 and the water tank heater is the most common cause of an infinite resistance reading. Inspect the full harness run and all terminal connections for damage or looseness.
- 02
Failed bimetal thermal cutout
Part replacementThe bimetal thermal safety device in the heater circuit can trip permanently due to repeated overheating or age, creating an open circuit. This will show as infinite resistance during the CN78 resistance test and requires replacing the bimetal or the heater assembly.
- 03
Shorted water tank heater element
Part replacementAn internal short in the heater element will produce a 0-ohm reading between the black and brown wires at CN78. A shorted heater element requires replacement of the heater component.
- 04
Loose or corroded connector at CN78
Wiring / connectionPoor contact at the CN78 connector on the main PCB can cause intermittent or permanent fault detection. Inspect the connector pins and housing for corrosion, bent pins, or incomplete seating.
- 05
Separated heater housing or contact error
Wiring / connectionPhysical separation of the heater housing from its mounting position can pull terminal connections loose, breaking the circuit. Inspect the water tank heater assembly for any signs of physical displacement or cracked housing.
