The SA code on a GE refrigerator indicates that Sabbath Mode is active. This is not a fault or error condition. It is a deliberately activated operating state designed to comply with religious observance requirements that restrict the use of electrical devices during the Jewish Sabbath and certain holidays. When active, the refrigerator's control board suppresses all user-facing outputs and inputs: the display panel goes dark, interior lights are disabled, audible alarms are silenced, and the unit stops responding to button presses or door interactions. Despite these deactivations, the compressor, fans, and temperature regulation systems continue to operate normally in the background.

Sabbath Mode is typically engaged through a specific button combination on the control panel, usually a simultaneous press-and-hold of multiple pads such as the Door Alarm and Filter Status buttons. The mode can be activated accidentally if those buttons are pressed together during routine use. Once active, the control board locks out user interaction to prevent inadvertent changes to the unit's state, which is a core design requirement of Sabbath-compliant appliances.

The mode will automatically exit after four days if no manual deactivation is performed. To exit manually before that point, the same button combination used to enter the mode, pressing and holding the Door Alarm and Filter Status pads simultaneously, must be repeated. Because the display is blank during this mode, technicians and users may mistake it for a power failure or a more serious control board malfunction.
