Error code 10 on a GE washer indicates a Mode Shift Feedback Monitor fault. The washer's control board has detected that the mode shifter, the component responsible for switching between agitate and spin functions, is in a different physical state than what the board commanded. This fault is only triggered when the basket or agitator is rotating faster than 3 to 4 RPM at the time of the mismatch.

It is not recommended to continue running the washer with error code 10 active. The fault indicates the drive system is not shifting correctly between agitate and spin modes, which means the machine may not operate as intended and could place stress on the motor or other drive components. Continued use risks additional mechanical damage.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. A mode shifter coupler or actuator motor replacement typically falls in the range of $80 to $200 including parts and labor. A wiring repair is generally less expensive, while a control board replacement can run $150 to $350 or more depending on the model and service provider.

Start by inspecting the mode shifter coupler for visible damage and confirm it can slide freely in and out without resistance. Clean away any debris or buildup restricting its movement. If the coupler appears functional, check the wiring harness and connectors at the mode shifter for damage or corrosion. If those components pass inspection, the mode shifter actuator motor or the control board may need to be replaced.

A reset may temporarily clear the code, but it will return if the underlying mechanical or electrical fault is not resolved. Error code 10 is triggered by a real-time mismatch between the mode shifter's commanded and actual states, so the root cause must be corrected for the fault to stop recurring.
