Error code 12 on a GE washer means the Dry Load Sense phase timed out. The washer tests the load weight by trying to spin the drum to a target speed before the cycle begins, and it could not reach that speed within the allowed time. The washer then skips that sensing step and moves on to the next part of the cycle. The most common cause is standing water remaining in the tub from a previous cycle.

The washer does continue the cycle after this timeout rather than stopping completely, but the underlying issue should still be addressed. If water is not draining properly, running additional cycles can stress the drain pump and motor. It is best to diagnose and resolve the cause before continuing regular use to avoid further wear on components.

If the fix is as simple as clearing a clogged drain filter or redistributing the load, there is no parts cost involved. A replacement drive belt typically runs in the range of $15 to $40 for the part alone. If the motor or drum bearing has failed, repair costs including parts and labor can range from $150 to $400 or more depending on the specific model and local labor rates.
