GE Washer Error Code 18

Error code 18 means the drain pump clearing algorithm failed. The washer ran the drain pump continuously until it hit the maximum allowed drain time, but the pressure sensor never confirmed that the tub was fully empty. This points to a blockage in the pump or drain system, a standpipe height problem, a failed pump, or a faulty pressure sensor.

Resetting the washer may clear the code temporarily, but if the underlying cause is not corrected, the code will return as soon as the machine attempts another drain cycle. A reset is useful for confirming a repair was successful, but it is not a fix on its own.

If the issue is simply a blockage in the pump or drain hose, the repair may cost little to nothing beyond your time. If the drain pump itself needs to be replaced, parts typically range from $30 to $80 depending on the model, with professional labor adding $75 to $150 or more. A faulty pressure sensor is generally in a similar parts price range. Getting a diagnosis confirmed before ordering parts will help avoid unnecessary costs.

Start by checking the drain pump for blockages such as coins, lint, or small articles of clothing caught in the impeller. Next, verify that your standpipe height matches the installation instructions. If the pump and plumbing check out, measure the pump resistance at the J512 connector on the control board: it should read 13.5 ohms. If the resistance is off, replace the pump. Also inspect the pressure sensor and its hose for clogs or damage.

It is not recommended to continue running the washer with code 18 active. The tub has not drained properly, which means water may still be inside and the machine will not advance through its cycle correctly. Running additional cycles without resolving the drain issue could leave clothes sitting in standing water or put extra strain on the pump motor.
