Error code 22 on a GE washer means the machine detected an out-of-balance condition during its dry load sense routine. This algorithm runs before water is added to measure the load, and when the drum detects uneven weight distribution, it triggers this code. The washer then abandons dry load sensing and switches to wet load sensing to continue the cycle. The most common cause is laundry that is bunched together, too heavy, or loaded unevenly in the drum.

Error code 22 is not a safety hazard. It indicates a load distribution issue rather than an electrical or mechanical failure. The washer is designed to handle this situation by automatically switching to a different load sensing method and continuing the cycle. No immediate risk to the machine or household exists when this code appears.

In most cases, error code 22 requires no repair cost at all since it is caused by how the laundry is loaded rather than a defective part.
