GE Washer Error Code 28

Error code 28 on a GE washer is a Mode Shift Feedback Monitor fault. It means the washer's control board sent a command to the mode shifter to change states, but the feedback signal it received did not match what was requested. This fault only activates when the basket or agitator is rotating faster than 3 to 4 RPM, meaning it surfaces during actual wash or spin cycles.

Continuing to run the washer with error code 28 active is not recommended. The mode shifter controls the transition between agitate and spin functions, and operating with a faulty or stuck shifter can put added stress on the motor and drive components. It is best to address the fault before running additional cycles to avoid causing further damage.

Performing a reset may temporarily clear the error code from the display, but it will not resolve the underlying mechanical or electrical problem. If the mode shifter coupler is damaged, stuck, or if a wiring or component failure exists, error code 28 will return as soon as the washer attempts to shift modes during a cycle. The root cause must be diagnosed and repaired for the fault to clear permanently.

Start by inspecting the mode shifter coupler for visible damage and confirming it slides in and out freely without binding. If the coupler is intact, check the wiring harness and connectors between the mode shifter and the control board for corrosion or loose terminals. If those components pass inspection, the mode shifter assembly itself may need to be replaced. In rare cases, a faulty control board is responsible.

Repair costs depend on the root cause. If only cleaning or reseating a connector resolves the issue, the cost is minimal. A replacement mode shifter assembly typically falls in the range of $40 to $120 for the part alone, with additional labor costs if a technician is needed. A main control board replacement is the most expensive scenario, often ranging from $150 to $350 or more for parts and labor combined.
