Eight flashes on a GE washer indicates a Motor Over Temperature fault. This means the drive motor has overheated and the control system has responded by reducing agitation stroke length and limiting spin speeds to protect the motor from damage. The condition can be triggered by an overloaded tub, a mechanical restriction, or a problem with the motor itself.

The washer is designed to protect itself by reducing performance when this error appears, so it is not in immediate danger of catching fire or causing injury during this reduced mode. However, continuing to operate the machine without addressing the root cause can lead to premature motor failure over time. The lid switch reset procedure can clear the stored fault code, but it will not permanently resolve the issue if an underlying problem exists. If the error returns after a short time running, further diagnosis of the motor and drive components is needed.
