E71 on a GE washer signals a key fault, meaning the main control board has lost communication with the keypad or user interface. The control board cannot read button inputs, which prevents normal cycle operation. The first step is to unplug the washer for 30 seconds and try again. If the code returns, further diagnosis of the wiring or control board is needed.

Start by unplugging the washer for 30 seconds and plugging it back in. If the error reappears, inspect the wiring harness connectors between the keypad and the main control board for loose or corroded pins and reseat them firmly. If the connections look good and the fault persists, the keypad assembly or the main control board will need to be replaced.
