The cause is most often a blockage somewhere between the dishwasher sump and your household plumbing, though a broken drain pump impeller can also produce this fault.

You should not continue running the dishwasher while this fault is active. Standing water left in the tub from an incomplete drain cycle can develop odors and may eventually lead to water damage if the issue worsens. Resolve the blockage or repair the drain pump before resuming normal use.

If the problem is simply a clog or a stuck check valve, the repair may cost nothing beyond your time. If the drain pump needs replacement due to a fractured impeller, parts typically run in the range of $50 to $150 depending on the model, with professional labor adding $100 to $200 on top of that. Clearing blockages in the drain hose or garbage disposer connection is generally a straightforward DIY task that avoids parts costs entirely.

Start by disconnecting power to the dishwasher, then inspect the entire drain path for obstructions: check the garbage disposer connection (and confirm the knockout plug was removed if recently installed), look for kinks or clogs in the drain hose, and inspect the sump check valve and drain loop check valve. If all those areas are clear, remove the drain pump and physically inspect the impeller for cracking or stripping. A damaged impeller requires drain pump replacement.

Resetting the dishwasher may temporarily clear the code, but the fault will return as soon as the next drain cycle encounters the same restriction. The underlying cause, whether a blockage or a faulty drain pump impeller, must be physically corrected for the error to stay cleared.
