When the Normal Wash LED and Clean LED light up together on a Maytag dishwasher, it indicates a motor high current condition has been detected. This means the wash motor is drawing more amperage than the control board considers normal, either during a Field Service Test or a wash cycle. The dishwasher will automatically attempt a 30 second restart during a consumer cycle to see if the fault clears. If it does not clear, the motor windings and wiring connections need to be inspected.

It is not recommended to continue running the dishwasher while this fault is active. A high current condition can generate excess heat in the motor and wiring, which may worsen the underlying problem or create a safety concern over time. The dishwasher will attempt one automatic restart, but if the fault persists, the unit should be taken out of service until the cause is diagnosed and corrected.

A reset may temporarily clear the error code, and the control board will already attempt a 30 second automatic restart on its own during a consumer cycle. However, if the underlying cause such as a failing motor, obstruction, or wiring fault is not corrected, the error will return once the dishwasher tries to run. A reset is useful for confirming whether the fault is intermittent, but it is not a substitute for proper diagnosis of the wash motor and its connections.

Some causes of this error are DIY-accessible. Start by checking for debris or foreign objects in the pump area, as a blockage is the simplest possible cause and requires no parts. You can also inspect the wiring harness and motor connectors for visible damage or corrosion. Testing motor windings requires a multimeter and some comfort working around appliance electrical components. Replacing the wash motor or control board typically requires intermediate repair skills and the right replacement parts.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. Clearing an obstruction from the pump yourself costs nothing beyond your time. Wiring repairs or connector replacements are generally inexpensive, typically in the range of $10 to $50 in parts. A wash motor replacement can run anywhere from $80 to $200 or more in parts alone, with additional labor costs if a technician performs the repair. A control board replacement tends to be at the higher end of the cost spectrum.
