E101 on a Maytag washer means the weighing system has detected a load weight that is much lower than expected. These washers use a load cell sensor to measure how heavy the laundry load is, and this code appears when that reading drops far below the normal range. It is most often caused by a wiring problem in the load cell circuit. The washer displays this code to prevent it from running a cycle based on inaccurate weight data.

Running the washer with an active E101 error is not recommended. The weighing system is used to set correct water levels and cycle parameters, so operating with a faulty weight reading could result in improper wash cycles or unbalanced loads. It is best to diagnose and resolve the error before resuming normal use.
