E12 on a Maytag washer signals an overfill failure, meaning the water level inside the drum exceeded the programmed target level by more than the allowed threshold. The washer stops operation automatically to prevent overflow. This fault is typically related to the water inlet valves, the pressure sensor, or the pressure sensor hose.

It is not safe to continue running the washer while the E12 code is active. Because this error indicates the machine is taking on more water than intended, operating it could lead to an overflow and water damage to your flooring, cabinetry, or adjacent areas. Leave the washer off until the root cause is diagnosed and corrected.

Repair costs vary depending on which component is at fault. Replacing a water inlet valve typically falls in the range of $80 to $200 including parts and labor, while a pressure sensor replacement is generally in the $75 to $175 range. A main control board replacement is the most expensive scenario, often running between $200 and $450 depending on the model and service rates in your area.
