Maytag Washer Error Code E80

The E80 code means the washer detected a timeout from its central liquid soap dispensing system. The system uses a signal called On Hold to communicate dispensing status to the control board. When that signal stays active for more than one hour without completing, the washer stops and displays E80. This fault always relates to the liquid detergent dispensing circuit.

It is not recommended to continue running the washer while E80 is active. The machine halts the cycle specifically because the dispensing system did not function correctly, which could result in a wash cycle with no detergent or incorrect detergent delivery. Running repeated cycles without resolving the fault could also mask or worsen an underlying electrical or mechanical problem.

Repair costs vary depending on which component has failed. If only a wiring or connector issue is present, costs may be relatively low, typically in the range of $50 to $150 for a service call and minor repair. Replacing the central dispensing unit or the main control board can bring costs higher, often ranging from $150 to $400 or more depending on parts and labor rates in your area.

Start by checking whether the central soap dispensing system is operational, which is the recommended first diagnostic step. Look for clogs, blockages, or residue buildup in the dispenser. Also inspect the wiring and connectors between the dispensing unit and the control board for any loose or damaged connections. If the hardware appears intact, a full power reset by unplugging the machine for a few minutes may clear a temporary software glitch.

A power reset, done by unplugging the washer for a few minutes and then restoring power, may temporarily clear the E80 code if the fault was caused by a one-time software glitch. However, if there is an underlying hardware problem such as a faulty dispenser, damaged wiring, or a failing control board, the code will return once the machine attempts another cycle. A reset alone is not a fix for a true component fault.
