Start by pressing Off and attempting to restart the cycle. If the code returns, check the diagnostic sub-codes (1 or 2) to determine whether the circuit is open or shorted, then inspect the thermistor wiring harness and connectors for damage or loose connections. If wiring is intact, test the thermistor's resistance with a multimeter to determine whether the sensor itself needs replacement. Repair the wiring or replace the thermistor based on your findings.

If only the wiring or connectors need attention, the cost may be minimal, involving little more than labor time and possibly a small connector repair kit. Replacing the thermistor itself is generally an inexpensive parts repair, with thermistor components typically ranging from around $15 to $50 depending on the model. If the control board's input circuit is at fault, repair costs can rise significantly, often falling in the range of $150 to $350 or more for parts and labor.

Pressing the Off key and restarting the cycle is the recommended first step and may clear the code if it was caused by a temporary signal glitch. However, if the underlying thermistor or wiring problem still exists, the HP code will return when the cycle runs again. A persistent HP code requires physical inspection and testing of the thermistor circuit.
