What F124 means on a Miele freezer
The F124 error code on a Miele freezer indicates a temperature alarm that is triggered in the period immediately following a defrost cycle. During a standard automatic defrost cycle, the freezer intentionally allows internal temperatures to rise temporarily so that frost and ice buildup can be melted from the evaporator coil. Once the defrost cycle completes, the compressor and fan system resume normal operation to bring the cabinet temperature back down to the set point. If the temperature has not recovered sufficiently by the time the control board checks it, the system interprets this as an out-of-range condition and displays F124.
This is largely a control logic issue rather than a failure of a physical component. The temperature rise seen after defrost is expected and normal, but earlier software versions did not account for the recovery window needed after defrost completion. As a result, the alarm would trigger prematurely, before the freezer had a chance to pull back down to its operating temperature. Miele addressed this directly in software ID 1796, which suppresses the temperature alarm for a period of 3 hours following a defrost cycle, giving the cabinet adequate time to recover without triggering a false alarm.
If F124 appears on a unit that has not been updated to software ID 1796 or later, the alarm may be a false positive tied entirely to this known control logic limitation. However, if the unit is already running updated software and F124 still appears, the alarm should be treated as a legitimate temperature fault and investigated further, looking at components such as the condenser, evaporator fan, door seals, and defrost heater circuit.

Common causes of F124
- 01
Outdated control board software
Wiring / connectionUnits running software versions prior to ID 1796 will trigger F124 as a false alarm after every defrost cycle because the alarm suppression window was not yet implemented. Confirming the installed software version with a Miele technician is the first step.
- 02
Slow post-defrost temperature recovery
Wiring / connectionEven on updated software, if the freezer takes unusually long to recover temperature after defrost, F124 can appear. This can result from a dirty or blocked condenser, reduced airflow around the unit, or a weakening compressor.
- 03
Evaporator fan malfunction
Part replacementIf the evaporator fan is not running at full speed or has failed, cold air will not circulate properly after the defrost phase ends, slowing the temperature recovery and potentially triggering the alarm.
- 04
Worn or damaged door seals
Part replacementA door gasket that is cracked, compressed, or not seating properly allows warm ambient air to enter the cabinet, making it harder for the freezer to recover temperature after defrost and increasing the chance of a temperature alarm.
- 05
Defrost heater or termination thermostat fault
Part replacementIf the defrost heater stays on longer than intended due to a faulty termination thermostat, the cabinet temperature will be elevated well above normal at the end of the defrost cycle, making recovery slower and triggering F124.
