The E316 error code on a Samsung air conditioner indicates a low pressure sensor fault, specifically an OPEN or SHORT circuit condition detected in the low pressure sensor circuit. The system monitors the sensor signal voltage and triggers E316 when that voltage falls below 0.4V (SHORT condition) or rises above 4.7V (OPEN condition). This check is performed when the compressor is preparing to operate, making it a pre-start safety gate that prevents the system from running under potentially damaging refrigerant pressure conditions.

The low pressure sensor is a critical component in the refrigerant circuit. It monitors suction-side pressure to protect the compressor from operating with insufficient refrigerant or under vacuum conditions. The sensor outputs an analog voltage signal that the control board reads continuously. When the signal falls outside the acceptable range (approximately 0.4V to 4.7V), the board interprets the reading as a failed or disconnected sensor rather than a valid pressure reading, and E316 is logged.

Importantly, the control logic is designed to skip low pressure detection during oil recovery cycles, safety start sequences, and defrost operations. This means E316 should not trigger during those specific operational modes under normal circumstances.
