When this function is disrupted, the system cannot complete the heat exchange process, which can lead to high-pressure faults and compressor damage if the unit continues to run.

The first diagnostic step for E446 is to check the fan motor's phase resistance and the chassis insulation. Phase resistance testing involves measuring resistance between each winding terminal of the motor using a multimeter. Significant imbalance between phases, open circuits, or readings near zero ohms indicate winding damage or a shorted motor. Chassis insulation testing checks for current leakage from the motor windings to the motor frame, which would indicate insulation breakdown and create a safety hazard.

Additional causes can include failure of the fan motor capacitor on single-phase units, damaged or obstructed fan blades preventing the motor from spinning freely, wiring faults between the control board and the motor, or a defective inverter board that drives the fan motor.
