E504 on a Samsung air conditioner is not a fault condition. It indicates that the system has entered an automatic oil return operation, a timed maintenance cycle that activates every 7 hours of compressor runtime and runs for approximately 3 minutes. During this cycle, the unit deliberately adjusts its operating parameters to encourage refrigerant oil that has migrated into the refrigerant circuit to flow back toward the compressor. This is a normal and expected function of the control system.

Compressor oil can gradually travel out of the compressor and into the refrigerant lines during normal operation. If oil accumulates in the evaporator coil, condenser coil, or refrigerant lines over time, it reduces heat transfer efficiency and can starve the compressor of lubrication. The oil return cycle addresses this by modifying compressor speed and refrigerant flow conditions to flush oil back through the system and into the compressor sump where it belongs.

During the 3-minute oil return cycle, you may notice changes in the unit's sound, airflow, or cooling output. These are expected and will resolve automatically once the cycle completes. No technician intervention is required when E504 appears as part of routine operation. If the code appears outside of normal cycling behavior or the unit does not resume normal operation after 3 minutes, further investigation into the control board or compressor circuit may be warranted.
