The P514 error code on a Samsung air conditioner indicates that the outdoor unit has triggered a SUMP DOWN 2 protection control. This is a compressor oil management protection routine. In refrigeration and heat pump systems, the compressor sump refers to the oil reservoir at the base of the compressor. When oil levels drop excessively or oil distribution within the refrigerant circuit becomes critically imbalanced, the control board activates protection logic to prevent compressor damage from oil starvation. The "2" designation indicates this is a second-level or secondary threshold trigger, suggesting the condition has exceeded the initial warning point and reached a more severe protective state.

This protection is built into the inverter control logic of the outdoor unit and is designed to shut down or restrict compressor operation before mechanical damage occurs. Oil migration in refrigerant systems is a known operational challenge, particularly during low ambient temperature operation, extended low-load cycles, or following refrigerant leaks. When refrigerant migrates back into the compressor sump, it dilutes the oil, reducing its viscosity and lubricating capacity. Conversely, oil can become trapped in the refrigerant circuit if the system has been off for extended periods or if refrigerant charge is incorrect.
