E253 indicates that the discharge temperature sensor for the fixed compressor (compressor 2) has become detached or separated from its mounting holder. The control board cannot read a valid temperature from that sensor, so it triggers this fault to protect the compressor. The issue is most often physical, meaning the sensor has simply come loose rather than failed electronically.

Continuing to operate the system with E253 active is not recommended. The discharge temperature sensor on compressor 2 is a protective device that monitors for overheating, and without a valid reading, the compressor could be at risk of damage from excessive heat. The system may already be limiting or shutting down operation in response to this fault.

Resetting the unit may temporarily clear the fault code, but if the sensor is still detached or damaged, E253 will return as soon as the system restarts and the control board checks the sensor reading again. A reset without addressing the physical cause is not a permanent fix. The sensor and its holder must be inspected and corrected before the fault will stay cleared.

Start by inspecting the discharge temperature sensor and its holder on the fixed compressor to confirm whether the sensor is still seated correctly against the discharge line. If the sensor has pulled free, reseat it firmly in the holder and check that the holder itself is undamaged. If the holder is broken, the wiring is damaged, or the sensor reads incorrectly after reseating, those components will need to be replaced before the fault will clear.

If the sensor has simply come loose and the holder is intact, the repair may involve only labor costs, typically in the range of $75 to $150 for a service call. If the sensor or holder needs replacement, parts costs can add $20 to $80 depending on the component.
