E481 indicates an indoor unit Electronic Expansion Valve open error, detected during cooling operation. The system found that refrigerant was flowing into a stopped indoor unit, causing the heat exchanger inlet and outlet temperatures to drop below 0°C for more than 20 minutes. This points to an EEV that is not fully closing when the indoor unit is commanded off.

Continuing to operate the system with an active E481 error is not recommended. Refrigerant migrating into a stopped indoor unit can cause liquid slugging in the compressor and lead to compressor damage over time. It can also disrupt cooling performance across the entire system. The unit should be inspected and repaired before resuming normal operation.

Repair costs vary depending on which component is at fault. If only the EEV coil needs reseating or a wiring connector needs to be reattached, costs may be limited to a diagnostic service call, typically in the range of $75 to $150. Replacing an EEV coil generally adds $50 to $150 in parts. Replacing the full EEV valve body or the indoor PCB can bring total repair costs to between $300 and $700 or more, depending on the specific unit model and local labor rates.

However, if the fault persists after those checks, diagnosing coil resistance, PCB output signals, or replacing refrigerant-side components requires proper tools and EPA refrigerant handling certification. A licensed HVAC technician should handle any repairs beyond basic wiring and coil inspection.

A power reset may temporarily clear the E481 display, but the error will return if the underlying EEV problem has not been resolved. Because the fault requires the sub-zero temperature condition to persist for over 20 minutes before triggering, a reset simply restarts the detection timer. Clearing the code without fixing the valve, wiring, or coil issue does not address the root cause.
