The M1-5212 code means the printer has detected that Tray 2 is empty of paper. The printer monitors paper presence using a mechanical actuator and a Photo Sensor in Tray 2. When no paper is detected, printing is halted and this code is displayed. Loading paper into Tray 2 is the first step to resolve it.

A reset alone will not permanently clear M1-5212 if the underlying cause is still present. The error will return as soon as the printer checks Tray 2 again. You need to resolve the root cause, either by loading paper or repairing the sensor assembly, before a reset will be effective.

If the issue is a faulty Actuator-Paper Empty or Photo Sensor, parts costs typically range from a few dollars to around thirty dollars depending on the component. A technician service call to diagnose and replace internal sensor components could add between fifty and one hundred fifty dollars in labor. Cleaning a contaminated sensor yourself costs nothing beyond a few minutes of time.

Start by loading paper into Tray 2 and confirming the tray is fully seated in the printer. If the error persists, inspect the Actuator-Paper Empty inside the tray for damage or obstruction, and check the Photo Sensor for dust or debris. Cleaning the sensor or replacing a damaged actuator will typically clear a persistent error.

The M1-5212 error is not a safety hazard, but it will prevent the printer from completing jobs routed through Tray 2. There is no risk of damage to the printer from the error itself. However, repeatedly forcing print attempts while the sensor is faulty could cause paper feed issues if the problem goes unaddressed.
