Samsung Refrigerator Error Code F-DEF ERROR

The F-DEF ERROR means the freezer compartment defrost cycle ran for more than 120 minutes without completing. The refrigerator detected that the defrost heater circuit is not working correctly, either due to a shorted heater, an open thermal fuse, a faulty bimetal thermostat, or broken wiring. Left unaddressed, frost will accumulate on the evaporator coils and the freezer will lose its ability to maintain proper temperature.

Continuing to run the refrigerator with this error active is not recommended for food safety. Without a working defrost cycle, frost will progressively block airflow over the evaporator coils, which will cause the freezer and fresh food sections to warm up over time. Frozen food may begin to thaw, and perishables in the refrigerator compartment may no longer be kept at a safe temperature.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. A thermal fuse or bimetal thermostat are relatively inexpensive parts, typically in the range of $5 to $30 each, though you will need to add labor if hiring a technician. A defrost heater element tends to cost more, generally in the $20 to $80 range for the part. If the main PCB is the cause, board replacement can run significantly higher, often $100 to $300 or more for parts alone, making professional diagnosis particularly worthwhile before committing to that repair.

A knowledgeable DIYer can diagnose this error by disconnecting the main PCB connectors CN70 and CN77 and using a multimeter to check continuity between the BROWN and ORG wires in the defrost heater circuit. A reading of 0 ohms means the heater is shorted, and an infinite reading means a component such as the thermal fuse or bimetal is open and needs replacement. Replacing the thermal fuse, bimetal thermostat, or heater element are straightforward repairs, though accessing the evaporator compartment requires removing freezer panels and partially defrosting the unit.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code from the display, but it will not repair the underlying defrost circuit fault. The error will return once the refrigerator attempts the next defrost cycle and again fails to complete within 120 minutes. A proper repair requires diagnosing and replacing the failed component in the defrost circuit.
