Samsung Refrigerator Error Code FZ-DEF-Sensor

The FZ-DEF-Sensor code means the control board has detected a problem with the freezer defrost sensor circuit. The fault can be caused by a separated sensor housing, a loose or corroded connector, a broken wire, or a short circuit in the sensor itself. The expected voltage at the sensor circuit connector should measure between 4.5V and 1.0V. If it falls outside this range, the sensor or its wiring needs to be inspected and repaired.

A faulty defrost sensor means the freezer may not complete its defrost cycles properly, which can lead to progressive ice buildup on the evaporator coils. Over time this can reduce cooling efficiency and potentially damage other components. Food safety could be compromised if the freezer temperature rises. It is advisable to address the error promptly rather than continuing to operate the unit with this fault active.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code display, but if the underlying fault in the defrost sensor circuit has not been corrected, the code will return. Resetting does not repair a disconnected harness, a failed sensor, or damaged wiring. The error should be diagnosed and the root cause resolved before relying on a reset to confirm the repair was successful.

Some causes of this error are DIY-friendly, such as reseating a disconnected connector or repositioning a sensor that has slipped out of its housing mount. However, testing voltage at CN30-Pin 5 to CN76-Pin 1 requires a multimeter and basic electrical knowledge. If the sensor itself has failed or the wiring is damaged, replacing those components requires moderate technical skill and comfort working inside the freezer compartment.

If only a connector needs to be reseated or the sensor repositioned, there may be no parts cost involved, though a service call can range from around 80 to 150 dollars for labor. Replacing the defrost sensor itself typically costs between 20 and 60 dollars for the part, plus labor if a technician is performing the repair. If wiring harness damage is involved, total repair costs can range from 100 to 250 dollars depending on the extent of the damage.
