R-DEF-SENSOR indicates a fault in the fridge compartment defrost temperature sensor circuit. The control board has detected a voltage outside the normal 0.5V to 4.5V range at the sensor connector, pointing to a disconnected connector, damaged wiring, or a failed thermistor. The defrost system may not operate correctly while this error is active.

It is generally not recommended to continue using the refrigerator long-term with this error active. A faulty defrost sensor can cause the defrost cycle to run too long or skip entirely, leading to frost accumulation on the evaporator coil and reduced cooling performance. Food safety can be compromised if the refrigerator is no longer maintaining proper temperatures.

Repair costs depend on the cause. A replacement defrost temperature sensor typically ranges from $15 to $50 for the part alone. If professional labor is needed, diagnostic and repair fees can add $80 to $200 or more depending on your location and the extent of the repair. A power reset may temporarily clear the error code from the display, but if the underlying fault in the sensor circuit is still present, the code will return.
