Error code 3-1 means the control board has detected an open circuit in the Temperature Sensing Circuit. The control is not receiving a valid signal from the temperature sensor, which can be caused by a disconnected or corroded wiring connector, a failed temperature sensor, damaged wiring in the circuit, or a faulty sensor input on the control board itself.

The dishwasher will not complete a normal wash cycle while the 3-1 code is active because the control board cannot monitor water temperature. Running the appliance in this condition means wash and dry performance will be unreliable or the cycle will simply stop. It is best to resolve the fault before using the dishwasher again.

First run the Service Diagnostic cycle to check whether the sensor is producing any readable output. Then unplug the dishwasher, disconnect the sensor from its wiring connector, and use a multimeter set to measure resistance (ohms). A functioning thermistor should show a measurable resistance value that changes with temperature rather than reading open line (OL) or infinite resistance. An open reading confirms the sensor has failed and needs replacement.

Start by unplugging the dishwasher, then inspect all wiring connectors in the Temperature Sensing Circuit for looseness, corrosion, or damage and reseat any suspect connectors. Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the temperature sensor and continuity through the wiring harness. If the sensor reads open or out of range, replace it. If the wiring and sensor both test correctly, the control board may need replacement.

If the fix is a reseated connector, the repair costs nothing beyond your time. A replacement temperature sensor typically costs between $15 and $40 for the part, and installation is a relatively accessible DIY repair for someone comfortable using a multimeter. If the control board has failed, parts alone can range from $80 to $200 or more, and professional labor will add to that cost.
