Amana Dishwasher Error Code 3-2

Code 3-2 means the control board has detected a shorted condition in the Temperature Sensing Circuit. This can mean the incoming water is above 167°F (75°C), the NTC temperature sensor itself has shorted, there is a short in the wiring or connectors leading to the sensor, or the temperature sensor input on the control board has failed. The dishwasher halts operation because it cannot safely monitor water temperature.

Running the dishwasher with code 3-2 active is not advisable. The control board cannot reliably monitor water temperature during the wash and sanitize cycles, which means water could overheat without detection or the dishwasher may not heat water correctly. Continued operation could damage the tub, door components, or dishes. Resolve the fault before returning the unit to normal use.

Unplug the dishwasher before testing. Locate the NTC temperature sensor in the tub, disconnect its wiring connector, and measure resistance across the sensor terminals with a multimeter. At room temperature (around 70°F / 21°C), a typical NTC dishwasher sensor reads in the range of 10,000 to 50,000 ohms depending on the specific part; check your service manual for the exact specification. A reading near zero ohms confirms the sensor is shorted and needs replacement. You can also run Amana's Service Diagnostic cycle with power applied to observe the sensor's live reading on the control before unplugging and testing components.

Start by checking the hot water temperature at a nearby faucet with a thermometer. If it exceeds 167°F, lower the water heater setting and retest. If water temperature is normal, unplug the dishwasher and use a multimeter to test the temperature sensor's resistance and inspect all wiring and connectors in the Temperature Sensing Circuit for shorts or damage. You can also run the Service Diagnostic cycle to check sensor operation before disassembling anything. Replace the sensor if it tests shorted or out of spec. If the sensor and wiring are good, the control board may need replacement.

If the fix is simply lowering the water heater temperature, there is no parts cost. A replacement NTC temperature sensor typically costs $15 to $40 for the part and is a moderate DIY repair requiring basic disassembly of the tub interior. If the wiring harness is damaged, a replacement harness runs $20 to $60. A new control board is the most expensive scenario, generally $80 to $200 for the part alone, and professional installation adds $100 to $200 in labor depending on your area.
