Amana Dishwasher Error Code 7-1

Error code 7-1 means the control board detected a no-heat condition in the heater circuit. The board attempted to activate the heating element and received no response, indicating an open circuit somewhere in the Water Heating Circuit or Heat Dry Circuit. The fault could be the element itself, a broken wire connection, a blown thermal fuse, or a faulty heater drive circuit on the control board.

The dishwasher will not complete a normal cycle with a 7-1 error active because it cannot heat water or run the heat dry function. Running it in this state will result in poor wash performance and wet dishes, and the cycle may stop mid-run. The appliance is not dangerous to operate in a limited sense, but continuing to run it without resolving the fault is not productive and delays diagnosis.

Disconnect power to the dishwasher before performing any checks. Locate the heating element at the base of the tub interior and access its wire terminals from underneath the dishwasher. Set a multimeter to the ohms setting and probe both terminals of the element. A reading in the range of roughly 15 to 30 ohms indicates the element is intact; an open line (OL or infinite resistance) confirms the element has failed and needs to be replaced.

Start by unplugging the dishwasher or shutting off the breaker, then use a multimeter to measure resistance across the heating element terminals at the bottom of the tub. A good element typically reads between 15 and 30 ohms; an open element reads infinite resistance and needs replacement. If the element tests fine, inspect all wire terminals in the heater circuit for corrosion or looseness, and test any inline thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat for continuity. If all components test normal, the control board's heater drive circuit may be the culprit.

If the heating element has failed, the part typically costs between $20 and $60, and replacing it is a manageable DIY repair for someone comfortable working around appliances. A thermal fuse or thermostat, if that is the failed component, usually costs under $20. If the control board is the cause, board replacement can run $100 to $200 or more for the part alone, which makes professional diagnosis worth the cost before purchasing that component.
