E63 means the center element's temperature sensor has detected an overtemperature condition. The cooktop shuts down that element as a safety measure. The cause could be restricted ventilation, a faulty sensor in the element assembly, a bad connector, or a failed generator circuit board. A resistance check of the sensor and an airflow inspection are the starting points for diagnosis.

You should not continue using the center element while E63 is active. The error exists to prevent overheating that could damage the cooktop or create a safety hazard. Other elements on the cooktop may still function, but the center element should remain off until the fault is diagnosed and repaired.

Repair costs vary depending on which component has failed. If only the sensor connector needs reseating, cost may be limited to a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150. Replacing the center element assembly or the generator circuit board will add parts costs that can range from $100 to $350 or more depending on the specific model, plus labor. Getting a diagnosis first helps avoid replacing parts unnecessarily.

Some causes of E63 are DIY-accessible. Checking that the cooktop's air vents are unobstructed and verifying that the sensor connector is securely plugged in require no special tools. However, testing the sensor resistance (should be approximately 1000 ohms at room temperature across the blue wires) and replacing the element or generator circuit board typically require comfort with disassembly and basic electrical testing. Resetting the cooktop by cutting power at the breaker may temporarily clear E63, but the fault will return if the underlying cause is not corrected. If the sensor is defective, the connector is loose, or ventilation is inadequate, the error will reappear during normal use. A reset alone is not a repair.
