What 3 means on a Fisher & Paykel washer
Error code 3 on a Fisher & Paykel washer indicates a RAM (Random Access Memory) fault detected within the Motor Controller during its initialisation sequence. When the washer powers on, the Motor Controller runs a self-diagnostic routine that tests its internal memory. If the RAM fails this test, the controller cannot load or retain the operating parameters needed to drive the motor safely, and error code 3 is triggered before the wash cycle can begin.
The Motor Controller is the dedicated electronic board responsible for managing motor speed, direction, and torque throughout the wash and spin cycles. Its onboard RAM is used to store temporary operational data during each cycle. A failure in this memory can result from a transient voltage spike, a momentary power irregularity during startup, or a corrupt initialisation state caused by an unexpected power interruption during a previous cycle.
Because RAM errors can sometimes be caused by temporary electrical conditions rather than permanent hardware failure, the first step is a hard reset by switching the machine off at the wall outlet, waiting at least 5 seconds to allow capacitors to fully discharge, and then powering it back on. If the error clears, no further action is needed. If error code 3 returns after the reset, the Motor Controller has a confirmed hardware fault and must be replaced to restore normal operation.

Common causes of 3
- 01
Transient power disturbance
Wiring / connectionA brief voltage spike, brownout, or unexpected power cut during startup can cause the Motor Controller RAM to fail its initialisation test. A simple power cycle by switching off at the wall for 5 seconds will often clear this condition.
- 02
Corrupted controller state from prior power interruption
Wiring / connectionIf the washer lost power mid-cycle previously, the Motor Controller may have been left in a corrupted state that causes RAM errors on the next startup. A hard reset is the first corrective action.
- 03
Failed Motor Controller RAM chip
Part replacementPhysical failure of the RAM component on the Motor Controller board will cause a persistent error code 3 that does not clear after a power reset. In this case the entire Motor Controller must be replaced.
- 04
General Motor Controller board failure
Part replacementBroader failure of the Motor Controller PCB, affecting the memory or the circuitry that supports it, will also produce this error. If the reset does not resolve the fault, board replacement is required.
