GE Washer Error Code 82

Error code 82 on a GE washer means the main control board has detected a problem with the water level sensor system. The water level sensor, also called a pressure sensor, monitors how much water is in the tub and communicates that to the control board. When that communication fails or produces an unexpected signal, the washer displays code 82 and stops the cycle. The issue can involve the sensor itself, the wiring connecting it, or the small air hose that feeds pressure data to the sensor.

It is not advisable to continue using the washer while code 82 is active. Because the water level sensor monitors fill levels, a malfunction could allow the tub to overfill, potentially leading to water damage or flooding. The washer should remain off until the sensor circuit has been inspected and the fault resolved.

A reset may temporarily clear code 82, but if the underlying problem with the water level sensor or its wiring has not been corrected, the code will return during the next cycle. To fully resolve the error, the sensor circuit needs to be diagnosed and the faulty component repaired or replaced. A reset alone is not a fix and should not be relied on as a solution.

Some causes of code 82 are DIY-friendly, particularly checking and reseating loose wire connectors or inspecting the pressure hose for kinks and blockages. However, testing the water level sensor itself requires a multimeter and some comfort working with appliance wiring. If the sensor or control board needs replacement, a technician is recommended unless you have prior appliance repair experience.

Repair costs depend on the root cause. If only a connector needs to be reseated or a hose cleared, the cost may be minimal or limited to a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150. Replacing a water level sensor generally costs between $25 and $80 for the part, plus labor. A main control board replacement is significantly more expensive, often ranging from $150 to $350 or more for parts and labor.
