The Drain System error means the washer detected that water remained in the tub after the drain pump was activated and the drain cycle ran its full duration. The control board expects the water level to drop to empty within a set time window. When that does not happen, the machine stops and displays this fault to prevent overflow. The root cause is usually a physical obstruction somewhere in the drain path.

You should not run the washer again until the error is resolved. Water sitting in the tub can develop mold and odors, and running additional cycles without fixing the drain path can stress the pump motor further. If the tub is full of water, you can manually drain it by lowering the drain hose into a bucket or by using the washer's drain-only cycle if it allows one. Address the underlying cause before resuming normal use.

If the fix is a clogged hose or filter, the repair costs nothing beyond your time. A replacement drain pump for a GE washer typically runs between 30 and 80 dollars for the part, with professional labor adding roughly 100 to 200 dollars depending on your area and the service provider. A faulty water level pressure sensor is generally a lower-cost part, often in the 20 to 50 dollar range, though diagnosing it correctly first is important to avoid unnecessary parts replacement.

Start by checking the drain hose at the back of the machine for kinks or clogs, then clean the pump filter if your model has an accessible one. Make sure the drain hose is not inserted more than a few inches into the standpipe and that the standpipe is at the correct height for your installation. A reset may clear the error code from the display temporarily, but it will return as soon as the washer attempts to drain again if the underlying problem has not been fixed.
