GE Washer Error Code E5F

E5F on a GE washer means the main control board and the speed control board have lost communication with each other. These two boards must exchange signals continuously to control motor speed and drum operation. When that link is interrupted, the washer displays E5F and stops the cycle. The issue can stem from a wiring fault, corroded connectors, or a failure in one of the two boards.

Start by inspecting the wiring harness that runs between the main control board and the speed control board, following GE diagnostic test 13. Check that all connectors are fully seated, look for damaged or pinched wires, and test each wire for continuity. If the harness is in good condition, the next step is evaluating whether the speed control board or the main control board needs to be replaced.

Repair costs vary depending on which component is at fault. If the fix is simply reseating a connector or repairing a wire, costs may only involve labor, generally in the range of $75 to $150. Replacing a speed control board or main control board typically adds parts costs that can bring the total repair into the $200 to $450 range, depending on the specific model and labor rates in your area.

A reset may temporarily clear the E5F code, but if the underlying communication fault is still present the error will return, usually within the next wash cycle. Resetting the washer by unplugging it for a minute or using the control panel reset procedure is a reasonable first step to rule out a one-time glitch, but persistent E5F errors require physical inspection of the wiring and boards.

It is not advisable to continue running the washer with an active E5F error. The error indicates the control system cannot properly communicate with the motor control board, which means motor speed cannot be reliably regulated.
