KitchenAid Dishwasher Error Code 6-8

Error code 6-8 signals an electrical problem in the water softener regeneration valve circuit. It appears only on KitchenAid dishwasher models with a built-in water softener. The fault indicates either a loose connection in the Regen valve wiring or an open solenoid coil inside the regeneration valve itself. Both conditions prevent the valve from operating during the softener regeneration cycle.

The 6-8 error specifically affects the water softener regeneration valve and not the main wash functions. However, operating the dishwasher with an unresolved electrical fault in any circuit is not recommended. The softener system will not regenerate properly, and continued use with a known wiring or component fault could cause further damage. Diagnosing and resolving the issue before resuming normal operation is the safest approach.

If the issue is simply a loose connector, the repair may cost little to nothing beyond your time. Replacement of the regeneration valve solenoid or the full valve assembly typically runs anywhere from $30 to $120 for the part, depending on the model. If a professional technician is needed for diagnosis and replacement, total repair costs including labor generally range from $100 to $250.

Start by unplugging the dishwasher or shutting off its circuit breaker. Locate the regeneration valve and inspect all wiring connectors in its circuit for loose, corroded, or damaged connections, reseating any that appear loose. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the Regen valve solenoid; an infinite (OL) reading means the solenoid coil is open and the valve must be replaced. Repair or replace whichever component is faulty to clear the code.

A power reset may temporarily clear the code from the display, but it will return as soon as the control attempts to activate the regeneration valve again and detects the open circuit. The underlying electrical fault, whether a loose connection or a failed solenoid, must be physically repaired for the code to stay cleared. Resetting without repairs is not a lasting solution.
