What F22 means on a Maytag washer
The F22 error code indicates that the Central Control Unit (CCU) detected a door lock failure after six consecutive unsuccessful attempts to engage the door lock mechanism. The CCU sends a signal to the door switch/lock unit at the start of each cycle, and when the lock fails to confirm engagement after repeated attempts, the machine halts and throws F22. The most common entry points for diagnosis are the door switch/lock unit itself and the wire harness connections running between the door switch/lock unit and the CCU.
For homeowners, this means your washer tried to lock the door before starting a wash cycle and could not confirm the door was secured. This is a safety feature, the machine will not run with an unlocked door. The problem could be a worn or broken lock mechanism, a loose or damaged wiring connection, or in less common cases, a faulty CCU that is not sending or reading the lock signal correctly.
Because six failed attempts trigger this code, the problem is unlikely to resolve on its own. Continuing to reset and retry the cycle without addressing the root cause will not fix the error and may accelerate wear on the lock assembly.

Common causes of F22
- 01
Defective door switch/lock unit
Part replacementThe door latch or lock actuator has worn out or failed mechanically, preventing it from fully engaging and signaling a successful lock to the CCU. This is the most frequent cause of F22 and typically requires replacing the door lock assembly.
- 02
Loose or damaged wire harness connections
Wiring / connectionThe wire harness connecting the door switch/lock unit to the CCU can become loose, corroded, or broken, interrupting the signal between the two components. The CCU cannot confirm lock engagement if the electrical connection is compromised.
- 03
Door not closing or aligning properly
Wiring / connectionIf the door hinge is bent, the door gasket is obstructing closure, or the door strike is misaligned, the lock mechanism cannot physically engage. This prevents the lock unit from completing its cycle even if the unit itself is functional.
- 04
Faulty Central Control Unit (CCU)
Part replacementIf the door lock unit and all wiring connections check out correctly, the CCU itself may be failing to send or receive the lock signal. This is the least common cause of F22 but should be considered after all other components have been tested and cleared.
